The Rose house was completed in mid-1888, and is owned by a woman named
Collette Rose, who came to Leopoldville from Paris, if her accent is
legitimate.

Later that winter, a minor nobleman from Belgium came to Leopoldville with the
intention of starting up a business. What type of business is unknown, because
he came down with a very high fever and died within days of arriving. With his
death, a small number of personal servants were left stranded in Leopoldville
with little money, and no-way to get back to Belgium.

Madame Rose took these people in, and a fledgling business of the oldest sort
began to blosson along the bank of Stanley Pool: it is the kind of place where
a man can get himself a bath or a shave, a bit of continental civility in
heart of darkest Africa.
