Communication between the far-flung European settlements of the Congo Basin
is spotty at best, and so it was a matter of some note when the
St. George, a mid-sized steamer under contract to the
Anglo-Belgian Ivory and Exploration Company, lurched her way to moorings at
the Leopoldville dockworks. Word is that the boat has made the arduous
journey all the way from Stanley Falls Station far upriver, laden with
ivory, ore, and a small amount of palm oil. But what really has people
talking is the crew: wan, sickly, wide-eyed and tight-lipped, like men
awakening from a long illnes or a frightening dream. Some say that the
foodstuffs went bad early in the journey, and that the crew were forced to
subsist on what they could glean from the forbidding banks of the Congo;
others opine that they were attacked en route by one of the deep forest
tribes. Thus far, the crewmembers themselves have said nothing.
